When I was in the process of shedding weight, I made some general rules that I committed to living by. These general rules helped guide my choices and gave me the strength to beat temptation when I was placed in certain situations.

Make a Lunch
If you make a lunch, you will have more control over what and how much you eat. Additionally, the temptation for consuming junk food is removed.
I Don't Eat French Fries at Lunch Time
This one is for the rare times that you do eat out at lunch. When in this situation, it is a good idea to substitute a side of fruit instead of fries. I am not going to say that you have to give up French fries totally. I am saying that you need to commit not to have them at lunchtime. If you go out to dinner, and you ate a healthy and light breakfast and a healthy light lunch, you can have the French fries, just be mindful of the quantity that you have.
Limit your Alcoholic Drinks to One or Two a Week
Alcoholic drinks can pack on the pounds if you let it. Therefore, limit your intake of alcoholic drinks.
Intake Your Calories from Food, Not Drink
Intake your calories from the foods you eat, not the drinks you drink, means lowering or getting rid of sugary sodas and juices from your daily routine. There are many low and no calorie drinks that can be substituted.
Exercise as Part of Your Daily Routine
Get exercise daily. This can even include going for a 20-minute walk at lunchtime.
Stop Eating Seconds
This one should be obvious. Make it a rule not to have seconds.
These are some of the general rules to shed weight that I have made and still by. It does not mean that I never break any of them. It means that I am mindful when I do break one of them. Additionally, I make certain that I have been cautious with my other meals before breaking any of them.
Therefore, if you want to shed weight make some general rules to live by for yourself.
